Personal profile:

  • Background: Started swimming at the age of 9 with Salisbury ASA. Competed at national and international level, and went out the USA to swim at university on a swimming scholarship.  After graduating from Louisiana State University decided that i had had enough of swimming, and was looking for something new to transition into. So moved into the sport of triathlon.  In my first year i raced as an age-grouper and won the age group World Championships in Lausanne Switzerland.  I turned pro in 1999. Since then the highlights of my career have been qualifying for 2 Olympic Games and 2 Commonwealth games, and most recently winning the Xterra World Champs in Hawaii in 2007.
  • Ambitions/Future aspirations: I continue on with similar results as to what i had last year. It was my most successful year to date wear i finished in the top 3 in 17 of 18 races. I also hope to defend my title at the Xterra world champs, and would look to take things one step further by also winning the 70.3 World Champs 2 weeks later. (Never been done before)
  • Favorite quote: Pain is Temporary, quitting is for ever.Favourite place to train: Lanzarote. The wind is relentless, and makes you tough, the weather is nice most of the year, and life is easy.
  • Worst Race: Athens Olympics Test event in 2003. I came out of the swim at the back of the front pack. Ran to my bike, put my helmet on and rushed out of transition. We had to run about 100m pushing our bikes. When i got to the mount line i went to jump on my bike, and as i was mid air i thought...."hang on a sec, this isn't my bike!!!". Doh! So i dismounted, ran all the way back ( as everyone else is rushing out), but the bike back, put the helmet back, and then grabbed my own. Luckily for me the girl who's bike it was hadn't exited the water. And lucky for her i did it in the test event rather than the real thing....as it was Kate Allen, the eventual Gold Medallist!
