The first was 7th in a good field in the inaugural South-West Inter-Counties X-C Champs behind such form athletes as Rob Whalley and Kevin Heywood. Next up was 2nd a week later in the 4th Brooks Westward League X-C at Bideford behind a fit Kevin Toher and then an un-planned excursion to make sure of the team award in the Blaythorne 10 miles in Cornwall. A win in a decent 53.50 (in a great pair of new Racer Sts) on a typically hilly Cornish course on a windy day, but only 6 days before the Southern and the first time I'd ever run 4 consecutive races. Disaster! A reasonable start and in the 30's after a mile and beginning to move through the field - half a mile later I began a long move back through the field which would last for 7.5 miles!
To add injury to insult a hamstring twanged with a k to go, so i couldn't even risk a big finish and get into the 30's, so a miserable 44th it was, a quick jog to the team minibus and an 9 hour journey from beautiful Holkham Hall back to Redruth. Oh joy!
