Team ACCELERATE – To Defend Gaelforce 12 Title

Team Accelerate, winners of the 2006 Gael Force 12 challenge in the west of Ireland are to return in 2007 to defend the title.

Team Accelerate, winners of the 2006 Gael Force 12 challenge in the west of Ireland are to return in 2007 to defend the title.

UK based Team Accelerate will return to Ireland with what is thought to be a more experienced team. Gaelforce tests teams of 4 (four male & one female) over a mountainous terrain and a distance of 200km.
Gaelforce 12, the more challenging of the events taking place over the last weekend in August, is an expedition style course which includes off road adventure biking, mountain trekking, fell running, abseiling, kayaking and night navigation. Competitors will suffer sleep deprivation but the reward is a course that takes competitors through some of the most scenic landscapers in Europe.

For those new to Adventure Racing, Gael Force 6 offers a testing but achievable introduction to the sport and in includes 20km of running/walking, including a trek up Croagh Patrick, 1.6 km kayak & a 44k bike ride.

Team Accelerate will be lead by the vastly experienced Adam Haynes, who has raced for some of the World’s leading Teams in some of the toughest races across the globe. Racing with Adam will be World Championship Racer and winner from Gael Force 12 2006, Kev Honeysett. The highly regarded adventure racer Debbie Smith, who is no stranger to multi disciplined events and along with Adam Haynes won the 2007 Open Adventure Endurance Series mixed pairs, will be one of the more experienced ladies seen at the event. Joining them will be Adam Macrinowicz who this year was part of the winning team at the Powerbar 3 Peaks Yacht race.

Returning winner from last year Kev Honeysett said, “The Gael Force is a fantastic event and I am very much looking forward to some top class racing. This whole area is a dramatic and challenging place to come and race”. Adam Haynes added that, “I have heard so many good things about the Gael Force that I am keen to race here in West Ireland. It should be a fantastic event and it sounds as though competition will be tough and Team Accelerate will have to be at the top of their game to win again”.

Team Accelerate will for the first time be wearing Brooks off road shoes, including the Cascadia and Adrenaline ASR. Martin Exley, Brooks UK Marketing Director, commented, “It is a first for Brooks to support an Adventure Race Team and it is good to be associated with Team Accelerate who will no doubt be pushing hard to retain their title”.
The Team is being funded from a number of sources including GHA Livigunn who helped to fund both travel and entry costs. In addition the Team is pleased to announce a new Team shirt sponsor Make Innovation Happen who helps companies ‘accelerate the process of product and marketing innovation’.

Event Organiser, Elizabeth Birdthistle, commented, “It is great to be able to welcome back Team Accelerate and it just shows the popularity of the event. The Gael Force Festival weekend takes place in Westport 31st August to 2nd Septmeber 2007.

The Gael Force West is now in its second year and is more than just an adventure race. It is a celebration of the outdoors from sky diving to zip wires, with parkour, ballooning and kitesurfing. Add to this a Festival of Adventure Racing, music and 10,000 visitors the atmosphere is truly awesome.
Gael Force 6: An introduction to adventure racing, it is a multi sport event of approximately 65km starting on the beautiful beach south-west of Kilary Harbour and finishing in Westport. For single competitors or Teams, the trail is marked and involves kayaking, trekking, running and mountain biking.
Gael Force 12: A full scale multi day adventure race involving the extremes of the outdoors over a challenging 200km course and 72 hours. An expedition style course which includes adventure biking fell running, navigation, night sections, abseiling and kayaking, for mixed Teams of four.

Team Accelerate are one of the UK’s most renowned Adventure Racing Teams. Squad members will be involved in this years World Championships and in the two years since they were formed they have regularly appeared on Channel 4 and are no strangers to success.
